Over 500,000 applications to connect household low-carbon devices have been processed on ENA Connect Direct since its launch in 2024.
The service is designed to support installers who need to obtain permission from the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to connect lower voltage devices, like domestic EV chargers and heat pumps, to the electricity grid.
The networks came together to launch the free-to-use platform two years ago to simplify the process, replacing paper-based forms. It is capable of issuing automatic approvals for routine applications via AI tools while more complex applications are escalated to the networks though a streamlined, digital process. On average, the platform is auto-approving up to 40% of applications, it said.
Nearly 78,000 new applications were made in the last three months alone, including electric vehicle charge points, solar panels, heat pumps and batteries.The milestone follows the UK surpassing a 269,000 solar panel installations in 2025 – the highest total recorded in a calendar year.
The platform was launched on the 7 May 2024 by Energy Networks Association (ENA) and seven UK DNOs. Recent updates to ENA Connect Direct now allow installers to submit applications for low-carbon devices such as electric boilers and air conditioning units, it added.

“Initiatives like auto-approval for eligible applications is one way in which ENA Connect Direct is further speeding up connections for customers, which is helping to accelerate low-carbon technology up-take overall.”
