National Highways to speak at Transport + Energy Forum event

Dr Joanna White, Roads Development Divisional Director (Acting) at National Highways, will deliver an update at the Transport + Energy Forum event which is taking place in Birmingham on 17th November.

National Highways, formerly the Highways Agency and later Highways England, is a government-owned company charged with operating, maintaining and improving motorways and major A roads in England.

Jo leads a division focused on environmental policy and standards, intelligent transport systems, energy and road design. Her teams have successfully delivered electric vehicle charge points near to the strategic road network to enhance existing infrastructure and support take up of EVs.

Jo started her career in 1999 at TRL working as a Researcher. Six years later she joined the Highways Agency as a Senior ITS Engineer in the Traffic and Travel Systems Group. In April 2012 she took up a new role, leading the National Operational Systems team in Traffic Technology Division, looking after all the systems that the Traffic Officers use to manage traffic and incidents.

In 2014 she returned on promotion to the standards and research part of the organisation leading the Intelligent Transport Systems group. In February 2020, she became a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Transport + Energy Editorial Director Alec Peachey said: “National Highways has set an ambition of net zero road user emissions by 2050. The company’s ambitions tie into wider Government ambitions and targets and they remain steadfast in their efforts to do everything they can to enable cleaner travel, whether that is through the transition to digital roads or how they can enable the transition to electric vehicles.

“We’re delighted that Jo will speak on behalf of National Highways at the inaugural Transport + Energy Forum and we look forward to hearing more about the actions the company is taking too decarbonise.”

The inaugural Transport + Energy Forum – takes place on 17th November at the Birmingham Conference & Events Centre and will focus on immediate steps that need to be taken to decarbonise now. The event is being supported by a number of industry partners, including strategic transport partnership group Black Country Transport (BCT), with others to be announced over the next few weeks. 

Spaces for local councils will be provided free of charge so that each participating company is guaranteed access to local government officers who sit at the heart of this transition.
