Vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen is to offer owners of its ID.4 compact electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) with three years of “unlimited” charging in the USA.

The move, which the manufacturer aims to provide at no additional cost to the vehicle’s purchase price, will see owners able to access a network of the company’s charging points across the country.

Owners will be able to use the Electrify America network, which includes more than 470 charging stations and well as 2000 fast charging points at present.

The ID electric vehicle range is the main part of the manufacturer’s plans to build some 1.5 million EVs each year by 2025. It is the central plank of VW’s £40bn investment in EVs across the globe with a focus on Europe, China and the USA.

Chief executive officer of Volkswagen Group of America said of the move: “By adding three years of fast charging at no additional cost through Electrify America, we are eliminating all barriers for mainstream compact SUV buyers to go electric.”
