The much-anticipated Type 01 electric vehicle (EV) has been unveiled by Jaguar in New York as the first production vehicle under its all-electric strategy.

The four door vehicle is built around the Jaguar Electric Architecture platform which will be used for the manufacturers’ EV range moving forward.

The Type 01 is powered by an 850V electrical architecture with a 400‑mile range from a 118kW battery, and adds 200 miles in 13 minutes using 350kW charging.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said the Type 01 is designed, engineered and will be built in the UK. Production of the vehicle will begin in 2027 at JLR’s Solihull factory, with body panels also being made at its facility in Halewood, and electric drive units and battery packs created in Wolverhampton.

Speaking at the Transport + Energy Forum in 2024 about the initial prototype, JLR Head of Public Affairs Murray Paul told the late Quentin Willson that it made the move as it plans to no longer be seen as “your dad’s car”, and is reaching out to a younger, creative demographic.

It follows news earlier this year that the UK Government will support the Agratas EV Battery Plant in Somerset, which is a £4bn to £5.2bn gigafactory owned by Tata Group, and will supply JLR’s EVs.

In a statement following the launch of the EV, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said:

“Jaguar’s new EV is a crucial step in JLR’s plans to invest over £15 billion in the UK, and another big vote of confidence in our world-class automotive industry.”

“This cutting-edge new model being designed, engineered and built in Britain will support thousands of jobs across the West Midlands and North West, and builds on over £1 billion of UK automotive investment secured just last month – marking another step forward in our mission to reindustrialise Britain.”

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, said:

“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era. Type 01 is the foundation of this British brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to create objects of desire, just as it was in the days of the E‑type and XJS.”

PB Balaji, chief executive at JLR, said:

“The unveiling of Type 01 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Jaguar.”

“Combining British heritage, bold creativity, advanced technology and groundbreaking engineering, it reflects our ambition to create objects of desire that will help us invite a new generation of clients into Jaguar’s loyal and passionate customer base.”
