Tesla has confirmed the company’s network of electric vehicle Superchargers is to be opened up to other EV models.

Elon Musk said in a Twitter response to a comment surrounding the lack of interoperability of Tesla chargers, that when the company created its own connector, there was no standard and Tesla was the only manufacturer of long-range electric cars.

“That said, we’re making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year,” he commented.

The move to open up the Tesla network comes during a period of increased focus on interoperability of EV charging networks, in order to influence EV take-up.

Roaming and interoperability agreements have been signed between a number of chargepoint networks already, and the government has already begun consulting earlier this year on improving the consumer experience at public chargepoints – including measures to enable payment interoperability between the various charging networks.

Recent chargepoint installations to include Tesla Superchargers include Moto’s Rugby site, which includes 12 Superchargers and 12 Electric Highway chargepoints, as well as a hub in Oxford which is to have 38 fast and ultra-rapid chargers, 12 of which will be Tesla Superchargers.

Tesla was voted the best charging network in Zap-Map’s annual ‘EV charging network satisfaction ranking’, and was praised for its “seamless” charging experience – no need for payment cards, automatic payments and free charging for early adopters.
