Extra MSA has partnered with Spirit Energy to install 840 solar PV panels at Beaconsfield Services (M40 J2).

Beaconsfield Services is the second site in Extra MSA’s estate to benefit from a large-scale solar installation on its roof, strengthening the partnership between the motorway services operator and Spirit Energy.

The new system expected to generate up to 356,006 kWh of clean energy every year, and is one of the largest single-site solar projects at a UK motorway service area.

It is projected to save Extra MSA an estimated £44,000 per year on electricity costs, and significantly reduce Beaconsfield’s overall environmental impact.

The initiative follows the installation of 810 solar PV panels at Extra’s Cobham Services (M25, J9/10) site last year, and brings the service station operator one step closer to meeting its 2030 target of reducing grid energy consumption across its estate by 35%.

Delivered by Spirit Energy, the installation is the latest announcement within a series of investments into promoting better sustainability across Extra’s locations, including a series of air source heat pump installations and a significant investment in expanding its EV charging infrastructure via continued partnerships with IONITY and GRIDSERVE.

Micheal Grantham, ESG Manager at Extra MSA, said:

“As we embark on our newest sustainable initiative, harnessing the power of solar energy, we’re glad to once again partner with Spirit Energy, a trusted leader in solar solutions.

“Exploring low-carbon opportunities across our portfolio is central to our sustainability commitment. Not only will this help us shrink our carbon footprint, but it will enable us to reinvest savings back into the people that make Extra such a welcoming and comforting environment: our team and our customers. From enhancing the customer experience to making our services more sustainable, we’re proud to be setting a new standard and driving long-term change across the motorway network.”

Tok Charles, Technical Design Engineer at Spirit Energy, said:

“We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Extra MSA, and work with one of the leading UK service operators who share our passion of a greener future.

“For the second time, our collaboration with Extra highlights the power of partnerships in delivering long-term sustainable solutions. The installation at Beaconsfield will produce over 300,000 kWh of clean energy every year and significantly cut costs, proving that sustainable solutions can deliver for businesses, their customers, and the planet.”
