Some 300 on-street electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints have been installed by char.gy as part of its rollout with Barnet Council in the first six weeks.
The deployment is one of the fastest of its kind in the industry, and brings the total number of charge points across the borough to 500.
It comes as char.gy stated that it “regularly achieves” installation rates of over 500 charge points per month, a capacity made possible by efficient lamppost integration and streamlined rollout processes. The Barnet installation is char.gy’s fastest to-date.
The installation comes as part of the local authority’s plans to install up to 1,000 new on-street EV charge points in partnership with char.gy – forming a core element of its ambition to be net-zero by 2042.
This deal will bring the borough’s total to around 2,000 once all phases are complete. Each installation typically takes under two hours.
The next phase will see nearly 40 legacy charge points replaced with new char.gy units, which aims to improve performance and convenience for EV drivers.
All charge points use Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) tariffs and offer char.gy’s Night Tariff at £0.39/kWh – making overnight charging cost-effective.
John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, said:
“Rolling out 300 charge points in just six weeks is a remarkable pace and reflects the strength of our partnership with Barnet Council.
“This is one of the fastest large-scale on-street EV deployments in the country, and it’s just the beginning. We’re proud to be delivering real momentum for EV adoption at scale, and in the communities that need it most.”
Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, Barnet Council, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with char.gy to rapidly expand Barnet’s EV charging network.
“Installing 300 charge points in just six weeks shows how serious we are about tackling climate change and making it easier for residents to go electric. This rollout is a major step toward our goal of becoming a Net Zero borough by 2042.”
