A UK-engineered electric motor by Advanced Electric Machines has reached an operational milestone of four million kilometres (2.5 million miles) in commercial transport operations.

The fleet of HDRM300 motors, designed and engineered in the UK by Advanced Electric Machines, were initially deployed in 2022.

The achievement was recorded across fleets of urban buses and light rail trains operated by a major transportation authority in Asia.

The motor’s have AEM’s proprietary magnet-free design, which ensures robust performance under heavy loads. Unlike permanent magnet machines, the motors are not sensitive to high operating temperatures, enabling reliable operation in demanding applications, such as rail transport, the company said.

The mileage achievements were validated through systematic tracking of operational data from the transportation operators.

AEM’s electric propulsion systems provide significant CO2 reductions compared to conventional diesel-powered vehicles, and cost savings through reduced fuel expenses. The HDRM technology further improves benefits with more efficiency at higher speeds, and loads compared to competing motor technologies, it claimed.

James Widmer, CEO of AEM, said:

“This is a significant achievement that proves the durability of our AEM HDRM technology in the most arduous applications in the commercial vehicle market.

“It builds on the historical reliability advantage of reluctance motors and demonstrates to potential customers that our innovative technology delivers exceptional longevity in real-world conditions.”
