About:Energy opens London test facility

Battery development software firm About:Energy is opening new headquarters at a test facility in Southwark, just a few hundred metres from the Thames and the City of London.

The facility, which claims to be the most centrally located battery testing location in London, will serve as a central hub for About:Energy’s UK and European customers.

The 3,000 square foot site features a laboratory designed to facilitate advanced battery performance testing and research to quickly gather critical data and insights for companies across the automotive, aerospace, and aviation industries, empowering them to build battery products, whilst reducing costs and timelines.

It offers comprehensive capabilities, including battery teardown parameterisation, and cell testing up to 1,000A. Work at the facility will focus on the adoption of next-generation batteries such as solid-state, sodium-ion, and Lithium iron Manganese Phosphate (LFMP), as these technologies require a significant amount of data to help companies understand their role in specific applications.

About:Energy offer the opportunity for firms and their engineering teams to have direct access to advanced battery intelligence and digital models through its software platform The Voltt, enabling them to build better batteries, and potentially accelerate timelines by reducing reliance on physical testing.

Through The Voltt, it provides a range of simulation products that includes data that provides insight on the thermal, electrical, and degradation of batteries so customers can make informed decisions when it comes to the development of battery packs, battery management systems, and warranties.

Gavin White, co-founder and CEO of About:Energy said:

“We want to build a new standard for the UK’s battery technology landscape, and this new facility is part of a long-term, multi-million-pound investment strategy over the next five years to support R&D and the commercialisation of leading battery measurement technologies.

“By leveraging our team’s experience from building some of the UK’s most advanced labs, including those at Imperial College London and the Warwick Manufacturing Group, we are committed to ensuring the highest levels of efficiency and quality in battery testing.”
