Electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions firm ChargeGuru has highlighted the inequitable access to EV chargers for millions of people living in flats.
The campaign, which lit up buildings across London in areas including London Bridge, Canary Wharf, and Barbican, aims to educate apartment residents and apartment property managers about the at-home EV charging solutions available.
More than half (53%) of residents living in flats plan to switch to EVs by 2029, adding to the 12% who are already driving EVs. But the availability of at-home EV charging points is “woefully insufficient to meet this growing demand”, ChargeGuru said, putting more than 3.4 million people at risk of being left behind in the next 5 years.
Currently almost 70% of flat residents are reliant on public charging stations, where costs are on average three times higher than home charging.
The campaign’s messaging included “Don’t overpay for EV charging when you could charge at home! FFS”. The FFS references the organisations’ Fully Funded Solution for EV drivers living in flats. For those living in flats, this cost disparity poses a significant barrier to adopting an EV.
ChargeGuru said there was a “clear opportunity” for property managers to respond – but less than a third (32%) plan to install charging in the next year to 18 months.
