Net zero transport “requires collaboration”
As the decarbonisation of transport moves into a key delivery phase, “unprecedented collaboration” will be required across government and industry to meet national and local goals, the Zemo Partnership Summit will hear today (3 October).
The summit, which brings together a gathering of senior policymakers from national, devolved and local government, with key public sector organisations and businesses, to help inform the UK’s delivery roadmap for net zero transport.
With a new government in place, the UK’s transport decarbonisation transition is moving into a key delivery phase, and the Westminster-based summit looks to begin the conversations needed for the transition.
The Summit follows September’s publication by Zemo Partnership of guidance setting out seven key principles to inform transport policy development. The guidance has been informed by the independent Council for Net Zero Transport, chaired by Lord Deben and convened by the Zemo Partnership.
Speakers at the event have commented:
Professor Sir Jim Skea CBE said:
“Climate change is an urgent and critical planetary challenge, warranting immediate and determined action across all continents and all sectors of human activity. Decarbonising transport is a key part of the solution.”
Simon Lightwood MP, Minster for Local Transport said:
“Delivering greener transport and accelerating the drive to net zero is one of this Government’s central missions.”
Simon Lightwood MP, Minister for Local Transport, DfT:
“Delivering greener transport and accelerating the drive to net zero is one of this Government’s central missions.
“We’re moving fast to deliver greener buses and trains, support the switch to electric vehicles on our roads, and secure the UK as a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel. I’m looking forward to speaking with the sector on future collaboration to achieve these goals.”
Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Scottish Government:
“It’s great to see the Zemo Partnership bringing together Government from across the UK, the public sector and businesses to outline priorities to tackle this issue.
“The Scottish Government is committed to a just transition to transport decarbonisation and a collaborative approach is the only way we can achieve this. “
Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Transport and North Wales, Welsh Government:
“Wales has been at the forefront in tackling the climate emergency, and we’re committed to achieving ambitious reductions in our transport emissions.
“I’m pleased that Zemo Partnership is supporting the Welsh Government in our efforts to decarbonise Wales’ fleet of commercial vehicles.”
Claire Haigh, Executive Director, Zemo Partnership:
“We should celebrate the UK’s global leadership on net zero and the progress that has been made so far, but there is still much work to be done. Transport emissions will need to decline much more rapidly during this decade if the UK’s targets are to be achieved.
“That’s why the Zemo Partnership Summit 2024 will bring together stakeholders from across the green economy, to outline a roadmap to accelerate this journey.”
