Formula 1 has announced a multi-year partnership with temporary power solutions firm Aggreko as it powers towards its net zero by 2030 goal.

The deal will see the power firm deliver low-carbon energy generation systems at all the European Grand Prix events from the 2025 season. As part of the contract, Aggreko will also become an official provider of F1.

Aggreko and Formula 1 have already been working on a system together since 2023, when the two companies first piloted a centralised power generation compound at the Austrian Grand Prix. The system reduced associated carbon emissions by more than 90% within the paddock, pit lane, and broadcast areas compared to the 2022 event.

The compound is now powered by renewable sources such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), biofuel, solar panels, and battery storage systems.

After returning to the Red Bull Ring earlier this season, the system was trialled again at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2024, and is also in place this weekend in Monza.

The expansion to all European races in 2025 means that stakeholders, including Formula 1, F1 Teams, and the FIA, are not required to use or bring their own generators, as enough power is produced through the centralised system to supply all garages and motorhomes across the weekend.

In addition, the system will also power the pit wall, the timing room, the Formula 1 Event Technical Centre (ETC) and the International TV Compound, where all F1 host broadcasters operate from at-event.

It significantly reduces the number of individual generators on site in these operational areas and therefore will reduce the associated emissions from transportation to site, the companies said.

Ellen Jones, Head of ESG, Formula 1 said:

”The entire paddock is part of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment and solutions like the  low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action. In practice, this means that we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this space – and we look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”

Robert Wells, President Aggreko Europe and Aggreko Event Services, said:

“Aggreko has an unrivalled track record of delivering power transition solutions across the globe, in the most demanding, challenging and mission critical environments to ensure the needs of our clients are met consistently to the highest standards. As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition and we’re thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to help them on their journey to be Carbon Net Zero by 2030. We look forward to continuing working with Formula 1, and together energising change for a positive future.”
