Firms join forces for UK “Tech Zero” taskforce

Energy company Bulb has partnered with 15 other technology firms across the UK to form the Tech Zero taskforce.

The group aims to “taking bold steps to tackle the climate crisis” according to a blog on the company’s website.

Bulb has joined with transport app Citymapper, allplants, Babylon, Faculty, GoCardless, Habito, Hopin, Moneysupermarket Group, OLIO, Onfido, Revolut, Starling Bank, what3words and Wise.

The energy firm set up the taskforce to assist in the acceleration of the UK government’s plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

It will be led by Bulb’s founder and CEO, Hayden Wood, and it is backed by Tech Nation, along with the UK’s net zero business champion, Andrew Griffith MP.

A launch event for the taskforce is due to be held in the coming months with CEOs of the companies coming together virtually to agree on ambitious targets.

It then hopes to get at least 1,000 UK tech companies to sign up before COP26 in Glasgow in November.

A toolkit will be created by the taskforce too to assist in “demystifying” climate jargon – and making it simpler for firms to set out a net-zero plan. Learnings will be shared with business and governments as it progresses.

Bulb has committed to reach net zero emissions by 2030 and is part of the B Corp Climate Collective – a group of more than 500 B Corps who have also set net zero targets by 2030.

It is also a member of the UN’s Race to Zero –  a global campaign to rally leadership and build support for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery – and Terra Carta – a charter led by the Prince of Wales. It forms the basis of a green recovery plan that puts nature, people and planet at the heart of business.

Writing about the plans, the company’s sustainability lead, Shaunagh Duncan, said: “We’re excited to bring together leading tech companies to accelerate our collective progress towards net zero.

“We hope that by sharing our experiences and learnings on the way, we can make an even bigger impact reducing emissions around the world. And we’re looking forward to updating you on our journey.”
