Osprey boosts Welsh public charging

Rapid charging firm Osprey Charging has boosted access to public charging in Wales with ten new EV chargers installed at Capital Shopping Park in Cardiff.

The shopping park offers eight 300kW DC chargers, which can add up to 100 miles of range in just 15 to 20 minutes, and two AC chargers available for those planning a longer stay.

The installation aims to encourage EV uptake in the area, bolstering the UK’s national charging infrastructure and improving local air quality, reducing noise pollution and supporting local decarbonisation efforts. It has also provided the landlord, abrdn, with a “future-proofed” car park as the number of EV drivers grows.

Osprey has funded the installation, operation and oversees maintenance of the chargers, which are all supplied with renewable energy. Its rapid charge points are compatible with every EV on the market today, it claims. Each charger also offers payment through contactless bank cards, Apple or Google Pay, the Osprey App, and RFID card payments as well as all major third-party payment methods including fleet cards. In addition, the company’s in-house software, Osprey Iris, enables reliability and innovation in EV roaming.

The company said its new Cardiff site was “a crucial part of Osprey’s roll-out of public charging infrastructure in key locations across the UK”. It now has more than 1,000 operational chargers live and available to use, and the network expanded by 150% in 2023.

Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging, said

“The roll-out of EV charging facilities is quickly gathering pace and we’re here to provide a reliable and rapid public charging service for all drivers, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands. Osprey now has over 1,100 charge points available to use across the UK, each carefully designed to maximise space, accessibility and made to the latest and highest standards.

“The new charging site at Capital Shopping Park will form a vital part of the re-charging network that will enable the decarbonisation of transport in the UK.”

Phil Huby, Head of Retail Parks, abrdn, said:

“The installation of eight high-powered EV chargers will significantly boost access to public charging in Wales, providing local residents, businesses, and visitors with reliable and convenient charging solutions. This initiative supports our commitment to sustainability and underscores our role in fostering a greener future for the community.”
