The UK’s largest bus and coach operator Stagecoach is set to introduce 715 electric vehicle (EV) vehicles to its fleet, along with making significant depot and infrastructure upgrades across the country.

The company says it is “committing to transformative investments across its operations, as part of its journey to decarbonisation”. The next stage of investment focuses on the acquisition of new electric vehicle.

This investment aims to bring numerous benefits to communities across the country by providing a more reliable and efficient service through the introduction of 715 new EVs to the fleet. This follows funding received from both the Zero-Emission Regional Bus Areas (Zebra) scheme and the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZeb). These new electric buses will deliver a more modern and sustainable public transport network for passengers, and contribute to cleaner and quieter neighborhoods through enhanced air quality and a reduction in noise pollution.

Significant updates are being made to depots too, introducing EV charging, battery storage, and the installation of solar panels to reduce reliance on the National Grid.

The new fleet of EVs are already starting to enter service and when complete, these new additions will mean 15% of Stagecoach’s total fleet will be EV and will see rapid charging infrastructure installed at a further 22 depots across the country.

Tony Cockcroft, Asset Management and Infrastructure Director at Stagecoach, said:

“We’re thrilled to announce this transformative investment to our fleet, which will enable us to modernise and upgrade our infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient transport system for communities across the country.”
