Fastned opens Essex ultra-rapid charging station

European rapid charging firm Fastned has opened one of its ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Colchester, Essex.

The site, which is the firm’s first in the county, is based at Colchester Northern Gateway Leisure Park which is being developed by Turnstone Estates on behalf of Colchester City Council and Canada Life and sits adjacent to the A12.

Eight charging bays at the site will be fully operational from launch and supplied by 100% renewable energy. Each bay is capable of adding up to 300 miles of range to fully-electric cars in 20 minutes.

The launch means Fastned now has 18 stations in the UK with the latest including the firm’s solar canopies that help EV drivers to locate the site and stay dry while charging.

Tom Hurst, UK Country Manager for Fastned said: “Drivers in Colchester can now benefit from the UK’s best-rated EV charging station. We are delighted with our first site in Essex and we look forward to welcoming drivers from the county (and beyond) to our highly visible, easy-to-use ultra rapid charging site”.

Will Quince, Member of Parliament for Colchester, said: It is great news that Fastned has chosen Colchester to be the home of their first ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging station in Essex. The site will be based at Northern Gateway which is the perfect location for users to make the most of the new facilities in the area while their car is charging.”

Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “Fastned’s plan for ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging is great news. It is vital that electric vehicle usage is made more practical and convenient, as we strive for cleaner transport options. Their commitment to renewable energy and rapid charging is a great asset for our residents and visitors. We hope this will encourage residents to take up electric vehicles and to visit Colchester confident in their travel choices, welcoming this eco-friendly infrastructure.”
