Welsh Govt tourist cash used for EV charging

The Welsh Government’s £5m Brilliant Basics Fund to deliver for tourism in the country will include plans to increase EV charge points.

Some 29 tourism hotspots will receive investment in local infrastructure, including electric vehicle charging. The fund, which is open to local authorities and national park authorities, also supports projects that improve accessibility and those that make their destinations more environmentally sustainable.

Projects include EV charging points in North Wales include Ynys Mon Council, Cyngor Gwynedd, Powys County Council and charging points at Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority facilities.

In South Wales, Carmarthenshire County Council will see cash for Carmarthenshire County Museum Car Parking Improvements, including EV charging and cycling support facilities, and Vale of Glamorgan Council setting up new charging points at its Gateway to the Coast. Newport City Council will also received £300,000 for installation of EV charging Infrastructure at key tourist sites across Newport to deliver a minimum of two charging points at a number of popular tourist sites.

Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Dawn Bowden said: “The projects supported through the Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics fund make a real difference.

“Local tourism amenities have a big part to play in making a trip a memorable one. These facilities often go unnoticed, but they are an important part of a visitor’s experience and also benefit those who live in the area.”
