Half of motorists “plan to switch” to EVs within 5 years

New research has suggested that half of UK motorists are planning to switch to an electric vehicle within the next five years.

The study, by tyre manufacturer Bridgestone, discovered that 40% will buy an EV by 2028, which is up 11% from 2022 figures. But more than two-thirds (67%) had fears about charging availability and 50% had range anxiety, which had increased by 21% from last year.

Some 50% also said they wanted to switch due to the potential savings on fuel costs and 45% for environmental benefits. Despite the government’s target to stop selling ICE vehicles in 2030, a quarter of respondents said they would never buy an electric vehicle. The rising cost of living was also reflected, with 56% of motorists saying they would potentially car share to reduce outgoings.

Bridgestone’s EV research represents part of its mission to continue to provide social and customer value as a sustainable solutions company toward 2050. It also forms part of its E8 Commitment – a set of eight areas (Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion, Ease, Empowerment) which guide its strategic priorities, decision making and actions throughout every area of the business and operations.

Bridgestone North Region Vice President Andrea Manenti said the survey results provided “valuable insight” into the future of mobility, but stressed that more work was needed to reassure all motorists of the benefits of EVs.

He said: “It’s clear that we are undergoing huge change in the automotive industry and our latest results suggest that EV sales are only going to grow, year-on-year. “These concerns were insightful and we are addressing many of them with premium tyres that meet specific EV requirements and help deliver optimal performance, as seen in our new Bridgestone Turanza 6 tyre.”
