The Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) has joined a working group of the UK Government’s Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce (EVET), it has announced.
Transport and Energy brand owner and LCRIG content director Alec Peachey will be representing LCRIG on WG1 – a group dedicated to supporting the delivery of the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
The 20-strong group includes representatives from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), National Grid, UK Power Networks, Energy Systems Catapult, LowCVP, Urban Transport Group, the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), industry and others.
Alec Peachey said: “Through working closely with local authorities in my role at LCRIG it has become clear that more focus and support is needed to boost local EV infrastructure.
“Local councils need to engage with the charge point sector and energy networks to discuss how this can be accelerated. This will be a key focus area for LCRIG as we move forward.”
The Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce was formed at the request of Government to make suggestions to Government and industry to ensure that the GB energy system is ready for and able to facilitate and exploit the mass take up of electric vehicles.
Peachey added: “Local authorities are going to be front and centre when it comes to the delivery of public EV infrastructure.
“We are seeing increased correspondence from our members about the challenges they’re facing in this area including demands from residents for more charging points.
“EVET was established to define the responsibility, guidance and resources that exist and are needed to support public bodies and private organisations in the delivery, operation, and maintenance of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure as an integrated part of the energy system. We look forward to continuing to feed into the work of this important group.”
