Newham installs 80 on-street chargers
Newham Council has expanded the availability of electric vehicle charging points across the borough with the launch of 80 new on-street charging points.
The new charging points are part of the borough’s ongoing efforts to provide residents with greener transport options in our effort to tackle the climate emergency in Newham.
In the first phase Allego will provide 40 dual socket fast chargers. Proving 22 kW of power, they have the ability to charge most cars and vans in around 2 to 4 hours.
Drivers who want to connect to the new charging points can make payment per kW through an app as a guest or with an account using a range of cards including VISA, Maestro & Amex.
Access is also available via RFID card of any of the interoperable partners including EV Box, New Motion, Chargemap, Charge Point, Charge4europe, Engie, Franklin Energy, Travelcard, Gireve and Hubject.
The agreement between Allego and the London Borough of Newham is part of the Go Ultra Low City Scheme (GULCS), a joint initiative between Transport for London (TfL), the Greater London Authority (GLA) and London Councils to install on-street EV charging points across the capital.
Allego currently operates more than 20,000 charge points throughout the UK and Europe.
Newham Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Sustainable Transport, said: “Newham Climate Now is about taking action against our poor air quality and doing all we can to build a cleaner and greener Newham.
“With the introduction of emissions-based charging in Newham, it’s imperative that we provide our residents with better access to greener options.
Allego managing director for the UK and Ireland, Paz Sharma, said: “The availability of on-street charging points across the borough is a game changer. Their installation gives drivers greater choice when considering greener vehicle choices and is just one part of our journey to help lower vehicle emissions in Newham.”
“We are proud and delighted to be working with Newham in delivering their Newham Climate Now initiative by lending our long standing expertise to ensure the best charging experience to electric vehicle drivers. We look forward to helping expand the charging network together.”
