Norway leads global transition with 80% low emission vehicle sales
New figures from Norway illustrate that it is a world leader in electric vehicles and highlights how transition can be scaled up rapidly.
The fresh data suggests some 81.6% of vehicle sales are plug-in electric cars in September 2019 with 62% being pure EVs. Cars sold include the new VW ID.3, the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2. ICE fossil fuel vehicles took only 11.1% of the overall market in the country.
In 2020, Norway has an overall cumulative share for plugin of 70.8% with BEVs taking 50.5% share and PHEVs taking 20.3%. Last year the figure was 56%.
The news follows concern about the speed of transition in the USA and Britian, as well as other G20 nations, to electric vehicles. Norway uses a number of incentives which has resulted in the significant uptake in EVs by consumers and businesses.
The incentives include no annual road tax, ferry fare reductions up to 50% of costs, up to 50% of car parking fees, access to bus lanes, company car tax reduction to 40%, no purchase or import taxes, and exemption from 25% VAT on purchase.
