Amey steps up ambitions to meet climate challenges

Infrastructure services and engineering company, Amey, is stepping up its green ambition in the run up to COP26 to meet the growing demand for innovative solutions to meet climate challenges.

Innovation in this vital area includes designing the UK’s first carbon neutral road improvement project – an £8m National Highways carriageway reconstruction in Cumbria, pioneering the use of solar lighting towers on site at Brent Cross sidings in support of Network Rail’s 2050 ambition for a low emissions railway and introducing energy saving smart lighting solutions for school estates.

To help support this work Amey is introducing a new Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship programme. This will see apprentices gain an IEMA-accredited Environmental Management degree with Coventry University supporting the apprentices’ practical development at Amey.

Within Amey there are two key ambitions:

  • Achieve Scope 1 and 2 net zero by 2035 with a minimum of 80% absolute reduction on a 2019 baseline
  • Be fully net zero including Scope 3 by 2040.

Amey uses its innovation platform, Springboard to encourage employees to submit their ideas on how the business could reach its net zero ambition. Over 260 ideas have been submitted. The ideas are now being reviewed and moving into delivery stage.

Amanda Fisher, CEO at Amey, said: “As an engineering company that delivers critical services across the built environment, transport infrastructure, energy and utilities management, we recognise the urgency and focus needed to reduce emissions.

“Change will come through everyone looking at what they can do to make a difference, so encouraging and supporting our teams to develop new talent and share their ideas is crucial.

“Working collectively with our employees, our clients and supply chain partners will drive the change needed to achieve the goals to minimise our impact on climate change.”

With COP26 bringing world leaders together to discuss and make commitments to tackling climate change, Amey is bringing its young people to the forefront, focusing on the day-to-day roles that are bringing about positive environmental change.

Over the coming weeks, case studies, interviews and short films will be shared across Amey’s social media channels, highlighting some of the innovative projects and trials that are driving Amey’s green ambitions forward.
