Islington has secured £932,500 of UK Government funding alongside private investment to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints across the borough.
The investment will enable the installation in Islington of at least 840 new EV charge points including 600 lamp column chargepoints and 240 fast charge points.
Installations will support the council’s ambition to deliver more than 1,400 on-street EV charge points by 2030, expanding access to convenient charging options for residents, visitors, and businesses, it said.
Procurement strategies for the new infrastructure are currently being developed and are expected to be submitted for decision in spring 2026.
The news follows Transport + Energy‘s latest video Talking T+E with Islington’s Assistant Director of Corporate Fleet, Transport & Accessible Community Transport, Chris Demetriou.
Councillor Rowena Champion, Islington’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport, said:
“In Islington, we’re making it happen for local people by tackling climate change and making our borough cleaner and healthier.
“Islington council has delivered more than 600 publicly accessible charge points and has plans to deliver more in the coming months and years. By making sure we have the infrastructure in place for electric vehicles, we can encourage drivers to make the switch to more environmentally friendly forms of transport, which helps improve air quality across the borough and delivers a huge range of health and wellbeing benefits including a lower risk of developing respiratory illness.
“By working in partnership with Camden council, we have successfully secured funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) for the period 2026–2030 and that will provide a significant boost to our works. This funding will contribute to more than 800 additional charge points in Islington to help local people adopt more environmentally friendly ways of travel.”
