New map reveals UK is leader for EV charging, but still lacks infrastructure

The map, from location specialists HERE Technologies, displays EV charging stations across Europe and is based on the company’s EV Charge Points data.

It shows the UK currently leads the way in number of EV charging stations, and London stands well ahead of other European cities, with more than ten times the amount of Rome and Madrid.

However, with an estimated 2.3 million charging points needed to meet the 2030 deadline ban on diesel and petrol cars, the map shines a light on the current situation, indicating that the UK is still a long way off from the infrastructure required to meet mass adoption of EVs.

Commenting on the map findings, Cyril Leman, senior manager, Auto at HERE, says: “The UK currently leads the way in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Europe, but there’s still a way to go to build the infrastructure required for the ban on petrol and diesel cars in 2030.

“With less than nine years remaining, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) estimates that around 2.3 million charge points, with 700 being added every day, will be needed to sufficiently meet this target and deliver the so-called ‘green industrial revolution’.”

“London is setting an example for the rest of the UK, and while it has around 6,000 EV charging stations, many of which feature multiple charge points, the SMMT numbers show that there needs to be rapid growth on top of this.

“The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) programme will likely have played a part in London’s figures, as electric vehicles are exempt from paying congestion charges, prompting an uptick in EV sales in the capital. Hopefully we could see other areas following London’s lead to spur adoption of EVs and drive UK cities toward a sustainable future.”
