Balfour Beatty has announced it has secured a place on SP Energy Networks transmission business’ Strategic Agreement for Overhead Line Works framework.

The five-year framework will see Balfour Beatty, alongside seven other contractors, replace and install new 400kV, 275kV and 132kV overhead line conductor systems – used to carry electricity across long distances – across Central and Southern Scotland.

There is an option to extend the framework for a further five years.

The framework will support SP Energy Networks transmission business in delivering the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 mission, it said. This mission aims to unlock more capacity for new homes, businesses, and clean energy projects, move power around the country more efficiently, and “significantly reduce the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels, all whilst boosting energy security”, it said.

Contracts, including defined scope and value of works, are expected to be awarded later this year and throughout the duration of the contract.

Tony Wilson, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission and Distribution business said:

“We’re proud to be a part of this strategic framework, which recognises our proven expertise in delivering complex overhead line projects and our track record of successful delivery in Scotland.

“Through the framework, we will work closely and collaboratively with SP Energy Networks transmission business and our local supply chain partners to ensure a stable and resilient electricity supply across Central and Southern Scotland, whilst also leaving a lasting, positive legacy for local communities through our commitment to providing numerous local employment opportunities.”

Guy Jefferson, Managing Director of Transmission at SP Energy Networks, said:

“We’re pleased to have Balfour Beatty and their expertise working alongside us as we lead the charge in helping deliver the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 ambition.

“Our strategic partnerships give suppliers confidence to invest in their business – growing workforces across the country and creating even greater opportunities for the UK.”
