InstaVolt has officially opened the UK’s largest single-operator ultra-rapid charging hub and announced updates to its off peak charging tariff to mark the occasion – with EV drivers able to benefit from a rate of just 50p per kWh for off-peak charging from 7pm to 7am via the InstaVolt app.
Launching as the UK’s largest single-operator Superhub, the Winchester site reinforces InstaVolt’s commitment to making EV charging more accessible and cost-effective. With launch pricing available from 1 April, it stands as one of the most affordable ultra-rapid charging sites in the UK during off-peak hours.
Strategically positioned just off the A34, minutes from the M3, the new Winchester Superhub boasts 44 ultra-rapid chargers, each capable of delivering charging speeds of up to 160kW. This location serves drivers travelling between the Midlands and the South Coast, as well as the 5.6 million visitors to Winchester each year.
Sustainability is at the heart of the Superhub, which integrates an on-site solar farm with 870 panels and a cutting-edge battery energy storage system capable of storing the equivalent of 1.5 million AA batteries. This innovative approach ensures that the site delivers reliable and sustainable charging while reducing reliance on the national grid and preventing over 94 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
The system ensures reliable, fast charging powered by renewable energy. With limited grid connection options at the site, the integration of solar panels and battery storage has enabled the development of a facility of this size and scale without depending solely on the grid for power.
The Superhub was officially opened by Danny Chambers, MP for Winchester, and Martin Tod, Leader of Winchester City Council, who hailed the site as a major step forward in the UK’s transition to sustainable transport.
Danny Chambers MP said:
“Anything that makes the transition to driving electric vehicles easier is vital for both the environment and our economy.
“I was particularly impressed by the integration between solar energy and EV charging which is a huge step towards true 100% sustainability.”
Martin Tod, Leader of Winchester City Council, added:
“This project is a great example of Winchester’s strategy for a more sustainable future.
“One of our top priorities is to go ‘Greener, faster’ and InstaVolt’s work here delivers exactly that. It brings our ambitions to life and provides a fantastic, cutting-edge facility right on our doorstep.”
The Superhub also offers a host of amenities designed for driver comfort and convenience, including a dedicated on-site café, children’s play area, 24/7 toilet facilities and a dog walking area, reinforcing InstaVolt’s vision of delivering the ‘service station’ of the future. Several biodiversity initiatives, such as wildflower planting, bat boxes and log piles, further enhance the site’s environmental credentials.
Delvin Lane, CEO at InstaVolt said:
“The Winchester Superhub sets a new standard for EV charging in the UK, offering ultra-rapid, reliable charging at one of the lowest prices in the country. With our new off-peak launch tariff of just 50p per kWh, this is one of the most competitive ultra-rapid charging sites in the UK, without compromising on what matters most to our drivers – quality, convenience, and speed.
“This multi-million-pound investment is our most ambitious yet, as we’ve integrated cutting-edge solar and battery storage technology to ensure sustainable charging. Drivers can charge with confidence, knowing they’re getting the best combination of price, performance, and accessibility anywhere in the UK.”
The opening of the Winchester Superhub marks a major milestone in InstaVolt’s continued expansion, with nearly 2,000 chargers now live across the UK and more in development, it reinforces the company’s reputation for reliability, scale and forward-thinking infrastructure.
