Jonathan Murray has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Zemo Partnership.

Jonathan will take over from Claire Haigh who is stepping down after just over a year in the role.

Jonathan has worked in senior positions at Zemo (and, formerly, the Low Carbon Vehicle) Partnership for approaching 20 years. Prior to that he worked on transport/environment projects, including as Director of Transport at the Energy Saving Trust.

Among a wide range of achievements, Jonathan led (under Zemo auspices) the groundbreaking Electric Vehicle Energy Taskforce (2019-23), engaging a uniquely wide range (over 350) of cross-sectoral stakeholder organisations. The Taskforce had significant impacts on policy as the UK accelerated into the delivery phase of our historic transition to electrified transport.

Jonathan currently leads Zemo’s trailblazing work for the Welsh Government on Decarbonising Commercial Vehicles in Wales, focusing on one of the biggest areas of challenge in terms of net zero transport. This work will conclude its first phase with announcements next week.

In the last year, Zemo has published the Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport, overseen by the Council for Net Zero Transport, chaired by Lord Deben (former Chair of the Climate Change Committee).

Claire’s tenure has also seen Zemo’s Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme – which fills a vital gap in the UK’s transport decarbonisation landscape – go from strength-to-strength, as well as the introduction of the Sustainable Racing Fuel Assurance Scheme

Commenting on the announcement, Claire Haigh said: “I am passionate about tackling climate change and am truly delighted to have been given the opportunity to complete The Tabula Project which seeks to find new ways to address some of our most intractable problems.

“Transport and the environment will remain a key focus for me and I am heartened that, as I stand down as MD of Zemo, I leave the Partnership in the safe hands of Jonathan Murray, with whom I have worked very closely for many years.”

Jonathan Murray said: “I am excited to take on this role at a critical time in the transition to decarbonised transport in the UK. We are well on the way to achieving our goals, though there are still challenges ahead both in policy and in delivery… but if we get this right, the opportunities to create benefits for both our economy and our environment are huge.

“I would like to wish Claire well in her endeavour, through which she seeks to tackle similar challenges, but from a different perspective.”

Jonathan Murray will formally assume the role of Acting Managing Director from Monday March 31st.

Jonathan is a member of the Transport + Energy Editorial Advisory Board.
