The UK has capabilities in key technologies and processes that need to be used to build a competitive electric vehicle (EV) industry, according to a report from the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC).

The Electric Machines Innovation Opportunities Report by the APC identifies some of the key technological enablers required to meet the ambitious roadmap indicator targets. These targets were outlined in the 2024 Electric Machines Technology Roadmap, produced by the APC on behalf of the Automotive Council UK.

It states how capabilities such as thermal management, energy efficiency, and diversified motor architectures are “key to accelerating innovation in e-motors and anchoring commercial value-add for the UK electrification journey”.

Dr Hadi Moztarzadeh, Head of Technology Trends, APC, said:

“To successfully scale, there are cross-cutting technology trends that must be tackled and leveraged. For example, AI-based design and advanced manufacturing techniques, such as Additive Manufacturing, can optimise performance and reduce costs.

“In addition, the upstream materials supply chain, specifically for magnet material, plays a critical role in the future of e-motors and EV manufacturing competitiveness in the UK.

“Investing in advanced recycling facilities can position the UK at the forefront of a circular economy for critical materials and future-proof a truly sustainable and resilient EV supply chain.”
