A new group called The 4R Battery Alliance has been formed by recell.store and Altilium to bring together the sector.

The alliance is chaired by Tom Rumboll, Board Advisor and principal of TR Advisory Ltd, and will bring together key stakeholders from across the battery supply chain. “4R” refers to repair, remanufacture repurpose, recycle.

It includes OEMs, recyclers, fleet operators, insurers and energy innovators, with the shared purpose of creating a forum for collaboration and driving real progress in EV battery reuse, repurpose, recycling, and resource recovery, the alliance said.

Attendees at the group’s first meeting included representative from Nissan, Halfords, Direct Line Group, Altilium, Allye, recell.store and LKQ Synetiq.

Members identified five key areas of focus for the alliance:

  • Battery testing: building confidence and consistency across all battery transactions.
  • Information sharing: enhancing transparency throughout the supply chain.
  • Skills and resources: ensuring the sector is equipped to handle growing volumes of end-of-life batteries.
  • Consumer engagement: bringing the public on the journey to electrification and full battery circularity.
  • Standards and safety: ensuring all parties adhere to best practices to protect people and the planet.

The group discussed a number of key challenges and opportunities within the EV battery supply chain. With critical minerals already being recovered from battery waste here in the UK, the 4R Battery Alliance aims to accelerate the
development of a circular economy for EV batteries, helping to establish the UK as a true leader in this market and supporting the transition to Net Zero.

Tom Rumboll, recell.store Board Advisor, said:

“The 4R Battery Alliance is about connecting, informing, inspiring – and most importantly – making things happen.

“By bringing together key voices from across the supply chain, we can ensure the UK leads the world in sustainable battery recovery, reuse and recycling.”
