MG Motor UK and GWM UK have launched their won variants on an electric vehicle ‘grant’, following the UK Government’s announcement of its scheme.
The news follows the £650m grant scheme – called the Electric Car Grant (ECG) – which will only be eligible for those who deliver electric vehicles “on the highest manufacturing sustainability standards”, the UK Government said.
Manufacturers must apply for zero emissions cars to be part of the scheme from 16 July, with funding to be made available until the 2028/29 financial year. Currently, 34 EV models are available from under £30,000.
Although MG said it “strongly supports the Government’s Electric Car Grant announcement” and the role it will play, it also wanted to produce its own support and would “immediately” offer buyers of the MG4 and MGS5 EV a grant of £1,500.
The MG grant will be over and above any incentives currently offered by MG’s 155 UK dealer partners, it said.
In addition, GWM is offering its own £3,750, which it said that was being taken as it doesn’t believe customers “should have to wait for the government to decide which vehicles qualify for the EV grant” so it has “taken matters into our own hands.”
GWM UK is offering the grant on its ORA 03 “rather than waiting for approval” for the vehicle, and said the UK Government’s grant was “leaving many customers confused” and waiting to see which models qualified.
