UK manufacturer of gritters and winter maintenance vehicles, Econ Engineering, has launched two new innovations to make gritting Britain’s roads more efficient and better for the environment.

The Econ Electric Trailer Spreader is the latest addition to Econ’s Zero Emissions Range, which aims to help operators reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining peak gritting performance.

It is the latest electric offering to be introduced by the firm, following the launch of its Electric – Quick Body Change in 2023 – a fully-electric vehicle that can switch between a gritter, tipper and hotbox body in minutes.

The independently powered, fully electric trailer has a 1.5sqm hopper and up to 3,000kg gross mass, providing reliable performance for both urban and rural settings. Its compact size makes it ideal for narrow streets and tight spaces, while its low noise emissions make it a great solution for nighttime spreading in urban areas. It can operate for eight hours on one charge.

The Electric Trailer Spreader is also equipped with Econ’s new patented Central Rotating Chute (CRC) Distributor.

Working in conjunction with the latest generation of SPARGO Control Systems, the new distributor provides a low, smooth throw of salt and a more accurate spreading pattern to reduce salt waste and ensure optimal road safety.

The CRC Distributor is available as an option on all Econ’s gritter vehicles, providing operators with better control, flow and delivery of their salt.

Jonathan Lupton, Managing Director at Econ Engineering, said:

“We are always looking at ways we can drive innovation that has a positive impact on our customers, whether that’s limiting environmental impact and waste, or making gritting Britain’s roads safer and more efficient.

“Our talented teams have worked hard to find solutions that will make gritting easier and greener, and we are delighted to be able to launch two new products that do just that.

“The new Electric Trailer Spreader and (CRC) Distributor offer cutting edge technology and cleaner, more efficient road maintenance solutions.”
