More than 80% of drivers actively seek out family-friendly charging stations, according to an InstaVolt commissioned survey.

The study by Censuswide, spotlighting International Family Day, also found that out of 1,000 nationwide electric vehicle (EV) drivers some 89% of respondents prioritise amenities such as food, toilets, and play areas when choosing where to stop.

Additionally, 83% have said that they often have meaningful conversations while they charge their EVs, highlighting how charging time is increasingly seen as “quality time”.

The findings come as more families plan UK road trips over the May half-term and bank holidays, supporting the growing demand for convenient, comfortable and family-orientated EV charging experiences.

The news comes as InstaVolt’s Winchester Superhub aims to set the standard for child-friendly charging stops. This site, located just off the A34 and a few miles from the M3, is built with families in mind, due to an on-site playpark, 24-hour toilet and baby-changing facilities, outdoor seating and a Starbucks café.

It aims to turn charging time into quality family downtime, whether it’s to pop in for a drink and charge after school, or for a stretch, snack and quick recharge before the next leg of a long journey, InstaVolt said.

Simon Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at InstaVolt, said:

“At InstaVolt, we believe charging time should work for the whole family.

“That’s why we’re developing sites with amenities, green spaces, and places to enjoy.

“Charging shouldn’t be a chore; it should be a chance to reset, refuel, and relax together.”
