Four industry-leading European electric vehicle charging companies have joined forces to create the Spark Alliance – Europe’s largest EV charging network.

The CEOs of Atlante, Electra, Fastned and IONITY – all major European ‘pure-player’ companies dedicated to EV charging – confirmed the first of its kind collaboration on April 2, 2025, at the Cercle de l’Union Interalliée in Paris. The aim of the Spark Alliance is to create one seamless charging network, simplifying the experience and making EV ownership easier than ever.

The Spark Alliance directly tackles the key challenges faced by EV owners today. Finding the best public chargers in the maze of different operators, apps, and pricing structures can be overwhelming, and successfully completing a charging session often requires downloading a new app or inputting a new payment method. The Spark Alliance will solve this confusion.

EV drivers will soon be able to seamlessly access, charge and pay at any of over 1,700 Spark Alliance member stations, with simple and transparent prices – regardless of their EV’s brand or model. To do so, they can simply use their favourite charge point operator’s app, without the need to download a new one. Drivers can go to any member’s charging station and use any of the other members’ apps to start and pay for their charging session. This applies across all four companies, creating a unified, open network for all EV drivers.

To help drivers find the most reliable nearby station while on the road, Spark Alliance members will display not only their own stations in their app’s route planners, but also those of fellow members. This will make it easier than ever to find one of 11,000 high quality charging points across 25 European countries, all supplying 100% renewable power, during their journey.

According to the companies involved, the Spark Alliance represents a major step forward in driver confidence and a pivotal change in the charging industry. This collaboration paves the way for the democratization of EV charging in public, setting the standards for mass adoption of EVs in Europe.  Atlante, Electra, Fastned and IONITY share the mission to accelerate the transition to electric mobility and drive a fossil-free future. By uniting forces, they are removing key barriers to EV ownership and enabling seamless EV travel across Europe, whether for daily commutes, business trips or special holiday journeys.

Stefano Terranova, CEO, Atlante commented:

“At Atlante, we are proud to be one of the Spark Alliance’s founding members: the four of us share common values and a strong commitment to shaping the future of electric vehicles’ charging. We will contribute resources, expertise and above all passion and determination to give existing and would be EV drivers the best possible charging experience. We will start with practical immediate steps, such as displaying our stations in each other’s apps – thus giving access to Europe’s largest fast and ultra-fast charging network “hassle free”. We will continue with other initiatives to make access to reliable and high-quality public charging easier, more transparent and secure all while leading the industry’s preparation for mass adoption of EVs. Setting the public charging infrastructure standards and introducing innovation cannot happen in isolation: the four of us have come together to get started and we will also actively seek other inspired partners that want to drive the electric future with us!”

Aurélien de Meaux, Co-Founder and CEO, Electra, said:

“Electra is delighted to actively contribute to establishing Europe’s largest public charging network. Together with Atlante, Fastned, and Ionity, we are standardizing the charging experience and further removing barriers to electric vehicle adoption. At Electra, we have always emphasized the speed, simplicity, and reliability of charging. With the Spark Alliance, we are going even further by offering a network of over 11,000 high-quality charging points, accessible at a glance without the need to switch applications. This is the future of electric mobility: seamless, economical, and environmentally friendly.”

Michiel Langezaal, Co-Founder and CEO, Fastned, stated:

“Electric drivers often find themselves in a maze: too many apps, chargecards, and low-quality charging stations creating confusion and anxiety. We’re solving this by bringing together Europe’s premier charging companies to create the smoothest charging experience across Europe’s largest network. In a crowded market, Spark Alliance stations will stand out from the crowd as a sign of quality and trust – simplifying the entire charging experience for drivers and accelerating EV adoption.”

Jeroen van Tilburg, CEO, IONITY, remarked:

“Driving and charging an electric vehicle should be exciting — not overwhelming. Our collaboration, powered by Europe’s leading dedicated charging operators, marks a major step forward and sends a strong signal for e-mobility in Europe: reliable fast charging, simplified across 25 EU countries — all within the app drivers already trust. United by a shared mission, we’re paving the way for a new era of clean, seamless travel across Europe.”
