Palmer Energy Technology has announced it will supply a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to FirstGroup Energy.

The agreement marks an important milestone in the ongoing partnership between the two companies to advance clean and efficient energy solutions.

Under the terms of the partnership, Palmer Energy will design, manufacture, and deliver a bespoke BESS that meets decarbonisation ambition of FirstGroup in the bus sector.

The system, engineered for flexibility and durability, is intended to help FirstGroup increase value from its energy infrastructure assets and optimise the total cost of ownership of its electric bus fleet.

The Palmer BESS incorporates the Brill Power Battery Management System, developed by the Oxford University spin out. Brill Power offer systems that actively balance the battery cells for extending life and provide analytical data for continuous maintenance.

Use of the Brill Power software helps Palmer secure data confidentiality, it said.

Dr. Andy Palmer CMG, Founder and CEO of Palmer Energy Technology, said:

“We are thrilled to have reached this important stage in our partnership with FirstGroup. This agreement underscores our shared vision of decarbonising the transportation sector, and it paves the way for a reliable, efficient, and future-proof energy infrastructure solution.”

Craig Leake of FirstGroup said:

“Finalising this contract is a key step in our mission to deliver low-carbon, cost-effective transport solutions. Palmer Energy’s expertise has been integral in choosing them as a partner. We look forward to receiving the system and integrating it into our operations as we further enhance our commitment to net zero.”
