More than half of adults in households without a driveway would be likely to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) if they had access to home charging solutions, according to a survey carried out on behalf of Trojan Energy.

The survey carried out on behalf of the electric vehicle charging company shows a clear preference for home charging solutions and the extent to which a lack of options in this area is a barrier to a just transition.

As part of the firm’s ongoing activity to build insight into consumer preferences under the EV transition, Trojan Energy and its partner WA Communications commissioned Deltapoll to conduct a survey of 1,000 drivers who do not currently drive an EV and do not have access to off-street parking. The survey was conducted in late June 2024 to understand attitudes towards charging and the wider market.

Key findings included:

–       54% see the provision of home charging solutions as a national priority for government in the EV transition, rising to 58% among those households with more than one car

–       54% of adults in households without a driveway would be likely to purchase an electric vehicle if they had access to home charging solutions

–       62% expect to charge their EV, when they get one, at home or on-street close to their home

–       50% of those with one or two cars feel that their inability to access home charging solutions is preventing them from switching to an EV

It’s clear that barriers to such solutions, both political and cultural, must be addressed to avoid leaving behind a huge segment of circa 7.8 million UK drivers who park on-street.

Further findings will be released shortly, including consumer appetite for government’s support in accessing on-street home charging solutions and attitudes of Gen Z and Millennials towards the EV adoption.

Mark Constable, Head of Public Affairs for Trojan Energy, said:

“Trojan is encouraged but not surprised by the results given our experience in the growing number of communities in which we operate. Home charging remains a clear priority for those without off-street parking, and a just transition to EVs clearly relies on having those opportunities for all.”
