Partnership between Paua and Applegreen will increase access to EV charging at motorway sites

A new partnership will allow electric vehicle charging solution provider Paua’s charge card and app to be used at 500 Applegreen and Welcome Break’s charging points in the UK and Ireland over the next year.

This new collaboration is set to transform the convenience and offerings available to EV drivers by expanding the Paua EV charging network to include Applegreen Electric’s ultra-fast charging stations.

Applegreen Electric’s new partnership with Paua will initially add over 250 ultra-rapid charge points across 20 Welcome Break motorway sites in the UK. The Applegreen Electric charge points will be readily available to Paua customers at Welcome Break and Applegreen services located along the major strategic road network arteries in the UK, spanning from London to Glasgow, Cardiff to Sheffield, and beyond.

These sites provide 24/7 driver support, offering peace of mind and assistance to EV drivers looking for an enjoyable charging experience to fuel their journey. Welcome Break, one of the UK’s leading motorway service operators, manages over 60 service areas and 31 hotels across the country.

Within the next 12 months, a total of 500 charging points at Applegreen and Welcome Break locations in the UK and Ireland will be covered by the partnership.

Paua now has access to more than 43,000 charge points at more than 14,000 locations managed by more than 25 charging providers across the UK. The addition of Applegreen Electric means that Paua drivers have access to the UK’s fastest charging network, with 73% of the UK’s high-powered chargers on Paua’s app and card all digitally integrated. The move increases convenience for EV fleet drivers – with Paua covering 85% of UK motorway service areas –allowing them to get back on the road faster, and for longer.

As of the end of 2023, the UK had 943,110 fully electric cars on its roads, in addition to 64,530 electric vans, according to New Automotive. While these numbers are rapidly rising, many UK businesses are still in the early stages of fleet electrification, managing mixed fossil fuel and electric-powered fleets. Charging infrastructure remains a key challenge for fleets of all sizes.

Jack O’Brien, Country Manager UK at Applegreen Electric said:

“Paua’s values align perfectly with our own in providing access to world-class rapid EV charging to drivers. Paua’s intuitive payments options combining app, card, live fleet dashboard and a full digital integration to Applegreen Electric will be a valuable asset to our business customers across our expanding EV network in the UK. Through partnerships such as this, we will help to remove one of the key barriers to EV adoption for businesses of all sizes, by making it easier for drivers to find and use reliable charging points, supporting the switch to electric and empowering EV drivers to enjoy their journey. Partnering with Paua will also make it much more convenient for business EV users that have a Paua card to access Applegreen’s growing network of chargers.”

Niall Riddell, Chief Executive and Co-founder of Paua said:

“We are delighted to have signed this new partnership agreement with Applegreen Electric that will see the Paua charge card and app accepted at 500 Applegreen and Welcome Break’s charging points in the UK and Ireland over the next twelve months. Enabling the UK’s first full digital integration with Applegreen Electric underpins our vision of a technology enabled charging future for fleets providing insight to save time and money on the transition to electric.”

Applegreen Electric, which is part of the wider Applegreen Group, focuses exclusively on developing electric vehicle charging infrastructure and delivers over one million fast charging sessions to its customers each year.
