UK “on track” to meet EV public charger targets

New research on the growth of the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure has suggested the UK is currently on-track to meet government targets by 2030.

The figures from DriveElectric have revealed a growth rate of 30% in chargers in one year. If the rate was replicated in future years, it would see the target of 300,000 EV chargers publicly available in the UK hit by 2030 – just over 10 times the amount currently available.

The statistics revealed destination charging was the most popular type across the UK with 17,179 such public charging devices by October 2022. These stations, often found in public car parks or shopping centres, make up 50% of current charging capacity.

On-street charging devices were the second most predominant public charging devices, making up 32% of UK chargers, with en-route charging points accounting for around 6% of the public charging devices in the UK.

More than 8,700 chargers were installed by December 2022, bringing the current total to 37,000.

The figure – a 30% increase in one year – needs to be maintained year-on-year to hit the target number of electric chargers.

It would also mean that annual installations will more than double to 19,000 by 2025 – before further accelerating from this point.
