Oxford City Council have removed barriers to licensing for zero emissions taxis and have issued them with Hackney Carriage Numbers to start operating clean taxis in Oxford City centre.

Clipper Automotive is a clean tech startup that began in Oxfordshire. The company have developed fully electric zero emissions taxis that they are now bringing to market.

Clipper Automotive makes truly zero emissions taxis (not hybrids) by upcycling London Hackney Carriages and converting them too fully electric. They have all the advantages of traditional Hackney carriages (tight turning circle, headroom, full wheelchair accessibility) with all the benefits of fully electric vehicles.

Co-Founder Dr Alex Howard said: “Despite the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in Oxford City Centre, there are still circa 90 diesel taxis running around in Oxford, with CAZ exemptions, which are set to continue polluting for many years to come. Clipper Automotive is working closely with the drivers to help accelerate the transition to zero emissions by incentivising the drivers to switch to the iconic zero emissions cabs or have theirs converted.

“The vehicles can make a significant impact on air-quality and carbon footprint, with an estimated 10 tonnes CO2 saved per year per vehicle. There are also massive savings in fuel costs to the drivers.”
