Large rise in eScooter usage as workers return to offices

Micro-mobility company, Dott, has reported a surge in demand for eScooters, as workers return to their offices after the summer holidays.

The heat map above shows the most popular recent routes across London. The rich variety of roads used demonstrates that riders take advantage of the full road network within permitted areas, exploring freely and travelling from city limits to the city centre.

In the first half of September, there has been a 46% increase in rider numbers across Europe compared to an equivalent period before the summer holidays.

Compared to the same period in 2020, rider numbers have increased by 106%. The increased use of shared micro-mobility for travel into work, demonstrates a shift in behaviour as riders value the freedom, independence and efficiency of shared micro-mobility.

As larger numbers start to return to their workplaces more regularly, they are looking for independent and sustainable ways of travelling.

25% of rides are now using Dott’s EV passes, allowing riders to save on their trips by paying in bundles much like a season ticket.

Henri Moissinac, CEO and Co-Founder of Dott, said: “We believe that our e-scooters can help to make the cities we operate in more pleasant places to be, with less pollution and congestion. As habits change coming out of the pandemic, many people are paying more attention to the environmental impact of their choices.

“The growth that we have seen as commuting habits return after the holidays shows that more people are choosing shared micro-mobility as the most efficient way to travel across a city in a sustainable way.”

Dott’s mapping technology shows that the most popular time for travel is between 17:00 and 19:00, with another clear peak between 07:00-09:00, as micro-mobility now becomes a preferred travel choice for commuters, not just leisure users.

The average journey in the largest cities is over 3km, as riders take advantage of more options to move efficiently across their city.

Dott’s latest usage figures have been released to coincide with European Mobility Week. This car-free day in Brussels on 19th September resulted in over 45,000 Dott journeys in the city, an average of 16 trips for each eScooter and a 115% rise on the previous week.

Over 30,000 unique riders used the service, travelling a total of 200,000km throughout the day, with 15:00-17:00 being the most popular time. This dramatic daily growth reveals the impact that taking cars off the roads can have, encouraging more people to choose a sustainable way to travel.
