Social media’s most popular hybrid and electric cars

A new report by car leasing provider, Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, has revealed the electric vehicles (EVs) most frequently posted on social media site, Instagram.

Global sales of electric cars rose by 43% to more than 3 million in 2020, and with popularity booming they’ve also become big on social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram and the TikTok.

As modern electric vehicle designs now account for some of the most stylish vehicles on the road, this report compiled a list of 108 best selling electric and hybrid vehicles from across the world, after examining hashtag data from Instagram for each model.

BMW’s i8 model boasts over 970,000 hashtags and is by far the most popular electric and hybrid model to date on the popular social media platform.

Ranking second is the Tesla Model S, hashtagged 509,000 times on Instagram for its aesthetically pleasing coupe-style design. Tesla dominates the top three with the Tesla Model 3 coming in third.

The most expensive vehicle to make the top 20 on Instagram is the Porsche 918 Spyder, which costs £671,918. This limited run model, of which only 918 have been made, can reach 0-60 in 2.5 seconds – an improvement from Porsche’s first ever electric vehicle in 1898 which traveled a mere 22mph. The Spyder has amassed 111,386 hashtags on Instagram.

And it’s not just top-end EV’s that have proven popular on social media, their affordable competitors are also getting plenty of coverage. The Renault Zoe has a price tag of just £28,795, but has racked up an impressive 47,243 hashtags. While the Hyundai Kona Electric, the cheapest car in the top 20, costing just £24,995, had been hashtagged 9,000 times.
