Roll-out of green number plates to highlight whether a car is an electric vehicle will commence next week, according to reports.

The British Number Plates Association confirmed the news that the registration plates, which come with a green segment on the side, can be used on all new and existing pure EVs from next week to illustrate difference to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The move is potentially important as it will enable local authorities and parking managers to offer incentives for parking to electric vehicles and allow enforcement officers to know if the correct vehicle is using a space.

Although specific details are yet to be published, the move could allow for other incentives beyond parking and charging spaces, such as the use of bus lanes and other types of road space.

The government hope that the move will encourage more people to purchase electric vehicles as clear incentives can be developed which make them a more attractive option than ICE cars.
